What our Kerala Bride Doll is Wearing

A traditional Kerala Wedding might look elegantly simple but the Kerala Wedding jewellery sets worn by the bride from God’s own country outshines all other elements. The different layers of intricate gold bridal necklaces that cover almost all of her bosom make her look like a divine Hindu Goddess. You will experience the epiphany that only Malayalis can love gold they way they do!

Attire:

Our traditional Kerala Hindu Malayali bride doll is dressed in a unique wedding attire unique to Kerala known Kasavu saree. This is white saree with a golden border and lace work.

Necklaces

The Kasavu saree works as a perfect backdrop to highlight the following numerous necklaces (mala and haaram) she wears:

  • Kingini mala:  This is a gold choker with thin, highly polished beads of gold.
  • Poothali mala: ‘Poothali’ literally means flower necklace. This is a much-beloved traditional choker with intricate designs of flowers and leaves.
  • Palakka Mala: This is mid-length gold necklace with leaf shaped motifs and encrusted with coloured glass adds a delightful pop of deep green against our bride’s white saree. In our eyes, this green of her necklace pays homage to Kerala’s natural greenery.)
  • Mullamottu Mala: A masterpiece crafted out of shiniest of gold, this piece of jewellery consists of repeated motifs of an elongated or rounded jasmine bud to form a beautiful necklace

    1. Pathakam: The ‘Pathakam’ necklace consists of a large gold pendant set on a gold chain. This beautiful piece of traditional Malayali jewellery is made with purest of gold.

  • Thali: Equivalent to the ‘Mangalsutra’ of the north of India, the Thali’ mala includes a leaf-shaped gold pendant attached to a delicate gold chain. The thali mala is fastened around the bride's neck by the groom during the wedding ceremony.
  • Maanga Mala: This is a necklace of paisley (mango) shaped motifs. It takes inspiration from the king of fruits that grows in abundance across the western coast of India (which includes Kerala).

  1. Kasu Mala: This is a piece of temple jewellery favoured by many brides in South India. As the name suggests, this special necklace is formed by gold coins and usually has the Hindu Goddess of Wealth Lakshmi engraved on each coin.

Hair Jewellery and Hairstyle

The ‘Nettichutti’ is A long gold chain with a multi-coloured gem-encrusted pendant dangling at the end. The pendant rests on the bride’s forehead and is a must-have on every bride’s list.

No Malayali Hindu’s bride’s ensemble is complete without jasmine (Mullapoo). Malayalis believe that incorporating jasmine strands in the hair brings good luck and prosperity to the bride. The preferred hairstyle is to get a dainty bun done just above the nape and section the rest of the hair into a long braid. The bun is then buried with jasmine. Hair Jewel pins are used to embellish long braid!

Earrings
Our beautiful bride is wearing “Jhimki” earrings. Mirroring the shape of a dome, the jhimki is a versatile ornament worn by many Indian brides. Its design usually consists of dainty floral motifs and dangling beads that sway with every move.

Nose Stud

The Malayali Manavati (bride) almost always opts for the ‘Mookuthi’ which is usually a simple, single diamond stud.

Vanki (Arms Bands)

Our bride doll sports golden arm bands highlighted with Elephant charms. It’s her way of paying tribute to the mighty elephant, the state animal of Kerala (which also adorns Kerala’s coat of arms).

Waist Jewellery

The waist belt or ‘Oddiyanam’ is a thick broad gold belt with intricate, detailed designs, and several delicate chains linked beautifully together to grace the waist of the bride.

Bangles

Scores of bangles usually adorn a Malayali Barbie bride’s hennaed forearms. The thicker bangles are called ‘thadavala', and the thin ones are called ‘Ottavala’. The thadavalas can be round thick bracelets or flat, broad ones with intricate designs.

Anklets

A ‘Kolusu’ is an anklet that is adorned by girls and women at weddings, religious as well as festive occasions in Kerala. They are traditionally crafted in silver.
